Skin types I, II, and III are usually more prone to sun damage and premature aging. Skin types IV, V, and VI are darker complexions that tend to withstand more sun exposure. However, darker complexions require more precaution in selecting the appropriate laser wavelength that will respect their skin tones.
Hair Lasers
We have a love-hate relationship with hair in our society. We want it on our scalps, eyelashes, and brows, but despise it almost anywhere else on our bodies. It is amazing to see how our obsession with this structure, composed primarily of dead protein, has become a multibillion-dollar industry. We do so many different things with our hair: from changing its color, texture, and shape to making personal statements about our individuality. Hair can even express sexual energy, which is why some religions prohibit women from showing their manes in public.
A multitude of laser and light devices are used for the depilation of hair. So many, in fact, that it can get confusing trying to choose the right laser to destroy the hair follicles without harming the skin. This confusion, besides being felt by consumers, is also felt by the practitioners purchasing and operating the devices.
During my seminars, I like to give information about laser light technology based on the specifications of individual wavelengths. In order to destroy hair, a wavelength that has an affinity for true melanin (brown/black pigment) must be utilized. Since so many devices claim that they will get the job done, I like to stress which of the available wavelengths is the most efficient for a particular Fitzpatrick skin type. For example, if you have skin type I, II, or III, there is nothing better and safer than a 755-nm wavelength alexandrite laser, or “Alex.” Skin types I–III tend to have finer and lighter hairs, containing less melanin. The 755-nm Alex is the gold standard for hair removal for people with lighter skin and fine hair at the present time.
If your skin type is in the range of IV–VI, the safest wavelength to destroy hair—while still respecting your skin—is the 1064-nm wavelength, the Nd:YAG. The 1064-nm wavelength does not have as much affinity for melanin as the 755nm laser, meaning it will not go for the melanin that is found in the skin.
People that naturally look tan or dark have structures under their skin called melanosomes that tend to be larger in darker skin types than in lighter ones. These are like little bubbles containing melanin. If you use a wavelength that has a lot of affinity for melanin, it will go for both the melanin in the hair and in the skin. The 1064-nm wavelength will only go for the hair if the hair is coarse and thick, making it ideal for use on individuals of African and Latino descent.
Only hair that is actively growing (in the anagen phase) can be destroyed by laser light. It is an absolute miracle that 85 percent of all hairs on the human body are actively growing from head to toe.
